After their exceptional form in 2011 the Turbos headed into 2012 with a number of key personnel missing. On the back of retirements and the All Blacks selection of both Aaron Smith and Aaron Cruden the team was completely different to that of the year before.

In the year that was driven by the ‘Save the Turbos Campaign’ Turbos fans and partners rallied behind the team in order to save it from being dropped from the competition on the back of financial difficulties and poor results.

After a relatively positive pre-season from the Turbos no one expected what would eventually transpire in Christchurch in the opening round. Written off by everyone but themselves and their fans the Turbos travelled to Christchurch and beat reigning champions Canterbury.

After their baptism by fire in 2006 the Turbos came back into a competition better prepared a ready to push for their first win. After a solid pre-season the Turbos would take until their fourth regular season game to get the result they were after.

The year marked the Turbos first return into New Zealand’s top provincial competition after years in the wilderness of heartland rugby. Dave Rennie was appointed to the head coach position and laid the foundation for the Turbos ongoing commitment to locally available talent.
