Two home preseason matches confirmed for 2019

The Manawatu Turbos are taking preseason Mitre 10 Cup rugby to Kimbolton.

Manawatu Rugby Union have confirmed the venues and dates for the Turbos’ four preseason matches in the lead-up to the 2019 provincial season including a match against Wellington in Kimbolton, a rural town north of Feilding.

That match, which kicks off at 2pm on Sunday July 28, is the fourth and final match on the preseason schedule.

The Turbos have one other home preseason match at Central Energy Trust Arena against the New Zealand Defence Force on July 10 at 2pm.

They also have away matches against Hawke’s Bay at McLean Park at 6pm on July 3 and against Taranaki at Hicks Park, Hawera at 6pm on July 19.

Kimbolton is one of two home fields for defending Hankins Shield club champions Feilding Old Boys-Oroua.

The match is a rare opportunity for a home Turbos game to be played outside of Palmerston North; it is the first since Manawatu played Wellington at Johnston Park in Feilding in 2016.

Chief executive Shannon Paku expected the match to garner plenty of attention.

“Being the side’s final hit-out of the preseason both teams will be fielding near full-strength sides including most of the Super Rugby boys. With Wellington in the Premiership, it will also be our last match against Wellington this year.”

Paku said having hosted just one home preseason games last year, they were keen to get out to the wider region this season.

“The match at Johnston Park in 2016 was well received and we really wanted to take the match to a rural venue this time. The rural community play such a vital role in what makes this community great and their support through the Rural Community Group over the past two seasons has been huge. We really hope the fans get behind the match.”

Manawatu has played one preseason game already this season beating Wellington 47-40.
