Turbos out-power Steamers
The Manawatu Turbos held on for a 17-15 win over Bay of Plenty in Rotorua on Thursday night. The Turbos scored two first half tries to claim the win. Jamie Booth, Junior Laloifi, Sam Stewart and Otere Black all impressed in the physical match.
Booth got Manawatu off to a perfect start when he scampered 50m through the defence and stepping the fullback for the opening try in the second minute. While the scrum was having a hard time, Manawatu stuck in the game by punishing Bay of Plenty for their errors. They extended their lead when Hamish Northcott and Laloifi combined to put Sam Malcolm into space.
The Turbos turned down a penalty shot at goal to go for the corner, but they lost the lineout aand went into halftime up 14-3. Laloifi almost got the Turbos off to an impressive start in the second half, only to be denied a try by the TMO when his back foot grazed the touchline. Black kicked a penalty to increase the Turbos’ lead.
A constant stream of Bay of Plenty penalties and handling errors helped keep the Turbos in the game, despite them not always having the territory they need to put points on the board. Aaron Carroll scored with 13 minutes to play to get Bay of Plenty within eight points.
With five minutes to play, Faalelei Sione was yellow carded for a coming in the side of a maul. Then Luke Campbell scored with one minute to play to cut the lead to two points. Kaleb Trask had a chance to win the game on fulltime with a 50m shot at goal but it fell short and allowed Manawatu to claim their second win of the season.
