TURBOS LOSE BOOTH FOR 2021

The Manawatū Turbos will be without captain Jamie Booth for their 2021 season.

The 26-year-old made the tough decision to withdraw from the campaign last week after taking medical advice on his recovering leg.

A decision on who will replace Booth as Turbos captain for the 2021 campaign has yet to be made. The team recently announced the signing of two halfbacks in Griffin Culver and Logan Henry to battle for the No 9 jersey.

Booth had been trying to work his way back from his broken leg picked up against Hawke’s Bay last season.

The injury left him with ligament damage and forced him out of the entire Hurricanes’ Super Rugby campaign.

In a bid to get back onto the field, Booth played the final handful of club games for Varsity in Manawatū club rugby.

In each of the games, including the Hankins Shield final, he spent the first half at halfback before moving to fullback in the second half.

His class and experience shone through on the field, but he did not have his usual burst of pace. The toll of the matches also became apparent in the days following each match.

Specialists have since advised him not to continue playing this year.

It was tough news for the halfback who has been one of the team’s leading performers over the past couple of seasons.

Booth debuted for Manawatū in 2014 which kick-started his rugby journey.

In 2015 he was called into the Blues, but did not make the field. In 2016 he spent a stint with the Newcastle Falcons in England before returning to New Zealand and being called into the Highlanders where he made his Super Rugby debut.

In 2017 he made his debut for the New Zealand Sevens team ahead of a strong provincial campaign which earned him a spot in the Hurricanes in 2018.

The following year he was on the outer in the ‘Canes but ended up playing a starring role for Japanese Super Rugby side the Sunwolves.

In 2020 he was signed back to the Hurricanes and put forward a handful of strong performances ahead of his Turbos’ campaign, which was cut short with the injury.

Booth has played 60 games for Manawatū.
