Rising star loose forward Sam Slade has transferred to the Manawatu Turbos for in time for the start of the 2018 season.
The 2017 New Zealand Under 20s representative linked up with the team on Monday, having spent the season impressing in Auckland club rugby.
He has been brought in to the Turbos to cover Jackson Hemopo, who is with the All Blacks.
Slade, 20, played six games for Auckland last year, starting every match he played.
But he was surprisingly left out of the Auckland side, despite playing a key role in Ponsonby’s Gallaher Shield run, including captaining the team for a couple of games.
“We had a pretty good season,” Slade said of his year with Ponsonby.
His move to Manawatu happened quickly.
“I got called on Friday night and they said that they were keen, so on Sunday morning I came down here.”
He said he was ready to turn on a big season in the green and white.
“There are a couple of superstars and Super Rugby players and I know some of the guys from previous schools and 20s camps. I am looking forward to getting out there.”
The Turbos kick off their campaign against Waikato in Palmerston North on Saturday.
