Shield Challenge buses confirmed

The Manawatu Rugby Union is hoping to ensure the Turbos’ Ranfurly Shield challenge against Taranaki is greeted by a green army by putting on buses to the match.

The Turbos challenge for the Ranfurly Shield on Friday 24 August against Taranaki at Yarrow Stadium in the second round of the Mitre 10 Cup.

The union has organised buses to get Turbos fans to the New Plymouth venue.

Manawatu Rugby Union chief executive Shannon Paku, who has had plenty of experience playing in front of parochial crowds during his playing days, said it was important to get as many Turbos fans as possible to the ground.

“When you play in front of a full house in those times when you are in the bottom of a ruck, or you are laying on the ground, or need to chase someone down to make a tackle, you hear the crowd roar and you grow another leg,” he said.

He said opportunities to challenge for the shield were something for players and fans alike to savour.

“The Ranfurly Shield challenge poses a unique opportunity to witness history. We are really excited by the team that Jeremy Cotter and Aaron Good have put together and we believe we have a good chance to return the Log o’ Wood to its rightful home.

“We have a limited number of seats available, so Turbos fans need to get in quickly to make sure they don’t miss out.”

This year marks 40 years since the province last held the shield when the great Manawatu side of late 1978 controversially fell to North Auckland deep into referee’s time.

It ended a 13-match shield tenure that started with an historic win over Auckland in 1976.
