Manawatu got their preseason off to a winning start with a 26-14 victory over Taranaki in Whanganui on Saturday.
The young Evergreens side battled out a tough encounter under the sunshine at Cooks Garden with some of the side's young guns capturing their opportunities while the Super Rugby players are unavailable.
Manawatu scored the sole try of the second half to claim the game safely.
It was a roaring start for the Evergreens as co-captain Sam Stewart crossed from a rolling maul on the back of some impressive build up play.
On the back of a swag of penalties, Taranaki put built pressure on the Manawatu pack, who were deemed to have collapsed a maul, costing them a penalty try.
But Manawatu stuck in the fight and when Adam Boult managed to toe through a loose Taranaki ball, he was too quick for the chasers and grabbed a try.
Late in the half Kaylum Boshier crossed for Taranaki to level the scores.
But with halftime beckoning, Manawatu were hard on attack and managed to steal the lead at the break after Boult scored from a scrum move.
The second half was a back-and-forth affair but Manawatu were defensively solid.
Siua Maile crossed for the only try of the second half after James Tofa cut through the Taranaki defence only to be tackled within inches of the tryline.
Tyler Laubscher was particularly dangerous with ball in hand, as were Tofa and Newton Tudreu.
Others to shine for Manawatu were halfback Bryn Wilson, prop Tietie Tuimauga, lock Micaiah Torance-Read and wing Ben Werthmuller.
Manawatu have one more preseason match against Wellington in Otaki on September 5.
Manawatu 26 (Adam Boult 2, Sam Stewart, Siua Maile tries; Stewart Cruden 2, Ben Wyness con) Taranaki 14 (Kaylum Boshier, penalty tries; Daniel Waite con) HT: 19-14
