Four contracted Turbos among MRU Academy squad

Four contracted Turbos players headline an exciting Manawatū Academy for 2021.

The group, which will once again be lead by Manawatū Rugby Union academy manager Eneliko Fa’atau, features 10 second-year players and nine first-year players.

Standout Turbos flanker/ lock TK Howden (Feilding Yellows) is sole capped player in group after making his mark in last seasons provincial campaign in his first season out of Feilding High School.

Former Whanganui Collegiate hooker Ben Strang (Varsity) and former Manukura prop Joseph Gavigan (Freyberg) will add some youth to the Turbos' front row stocks.

Young Kia Toa lock Ofa Tauatevalu, who came from Gisborne Boys’ High School, has also been signed after turning on some top displays for the Manawatū Under 20 and academy teams.

Strang, Howden and Tauatevalu were involved in the Hurricanes preseason.

Also returning to the academy are former Hasting Boys’ High School flanker Julian Goerke (Varsity), ex Scots College hooker Sase Va’a (Kia Toa), Palmerston North Boys’ High School alumni midfielder Chance Malu (Freyberg) and prop Darius Mafile’o (Freyberg) and ex Whanganui Collegiate flanker Jason Myers (Te Kawau) and first five-eighth Te Atawhai Mason (Kia Toa).

New Zealand Secondary School Barbarians loose forward Elyjah Crosswell leads the group of first year players.

Crosswell was a standout in the Palmerston North Boys’ High School First XV and will ply his trade for College Old Boys this year.

Feilding High School’s impressive midfield combination of Kyle Brown and Faleseu Tauailoto will play for Feilding Yellows and Feilding Old Boys-Ōroua respectively.

Fellow Feilding High School player Moape Rokosuka has also joined the academy. The fleet-footed halfback will join Tauailoto at halfback.

Two hookers are among the first-year group in Boys’ High pairing Raymond Tuputupu (Freyberg) and Bryn Gordon (Old Boys-Marist). Gordon spent time as a loose forward for Boys’ High but will focus on the No 2 jersey in the academy.

Boys’ High lock Hunter Morrison (Te Kawau), wing Tevita Henare-Schuster (Kia Toa) and prop Feleti Sae Taufo'ou (Freberg) round out the academy squad.

Graduating from the academy are Turbos Stewart Cruden, Drew Wild, Josiah Maraku, Tyler Laubscher and Bryn Wilson along with high performance squad member Flyn Yates.
