Former Manawatu coach Owen Gleeson passes

Manawatu Rugby has lost another legend.

It is with great sadness that we hear of the passing of Owen Gleeson.

Owen Gleeson was a life member of the MRU and a former MRU president.

A flanker from Feilding and Marist, Owen played 24 games for Manawatu between 1954 and 1957.

In 1953 he was part of a New Zealand Kayforce  team that toured Japan, selected from those serving in the Korean War.

He was Manawatu selector and coach between 1970-1974.

His father William also played for Manawatu, while brother Jack coached the All Blacks.

Our thoughts are with his son and current board member Mark Gleeson and the Gleeson family.

MRU chairman Tim Myers: "The MRU community mourns the loss of another Life Member and staunch supporter of rugby in the Manawatu and sport in general."

"Like Sam, Owen was a true gentleman who will be missed by all who came into contact with him. Out thoughts are with his family".
