Cameron signs with Turbos

All Blacks and Crusaders first five-eighth Brett Cameron has signed for the Manawatū Turbos for the provincial season.

The 24-year-old said he was excited to challenge himself by playing in a different environment and it was a bonus to be able to closer to his family in Whanganui.

“It is a good new challenge for me,” he said. “It is also a chance to be close to home which is pretty cool.”

“I am pretty excited to get alongside a young team and test myself in a new environment and keep growing as a player.”

Born in Whanganui, Cameron attended Cullinane College before shifting to Christchurch to study and be part of the Canterbury academy programme.

He has been based in Christchurch ever since.

“I have been down here [Christchurch] for quite a while now straight out of school. It is going to be nice change being close to home.”

He made his provincial debut for Canterbury in 2017 and was promoted to the Crusaders in 2018.

His stunning provincial form in the 2018 season saw him called into the All Blacks for their end of season tour.

He made his test debut off the bench against Japan.

Returning to the All Blacks was a driver for him, but he said his focus was on building consistency in his game.

“From what gametime I do get, just keep growing on my performances and be consistent. Then moving into [NPC] just keep nailing my role with consistent performances for Manawatū,” he said.

Cameron has started 2021 on a positive note with a strong performance in the Crusaders’ preseason match against the Highlanders including nailing the match-winning conversion.

He will battle with All Blacks incumbent No 10 Richie Mo’unga and Crusaders young-gun Fergus Burke for gametime at the Crusaders this year.

“It is having Richie and being able to learn off him and with Fergus as well, we are all really competitive. Competing for that [No 10] jersey every week makes us all better in the competition.”

He hoped for a top Super Rugby season with the defending champions before his debut campaign with the Turbos.
