Post Match Report
A double from Andre Taylor helped the Manawatu Turbos pick up their first win of the season31-25 over Northland in Palmerston North on Thursday night.
The veteran wing, making his first start for the Turbos in 10 years, grabbed the opener with Jamie Booth and Ngani Laumape also starring for the side.
It was another wet-weather match for the green and whites at Central Energy Trust Arena.
The first try came in the eighth minute as Laumape set Adam Boult free with a perfectly-timed inside ball. Boult got the ball away to Hamish Northcott who set Taylor away in the corner.
Boult was another to impress as he continues to find his feet at Mitre 10 Cup level. The left wing had two tries, one in each half, correctly declined by the TMO.
Otere Black, playing his 50th match, kick a penalty thanks to the ball bouncing off the cross bar to put the team 10-points clear.
But Northland answered back when Sam Nock darted down the short-side for a try and a penalty shortly after had the scores level.
With six minutes to play in the half, Black put Sam Malcolm in a hole and the fullback found Booth who almost made it to the line before offloading to Johnny Galloway.
On the stroke of halftime, Laumape charged into a gap and his kick was weighted perfectly for Booth to put the Turbos 24-10 clear at the break.
But as the rain started to fall in the second half Northland closed the gap to 24-20.
Taylor bagged his second when Black stabbed a kick through the Northland line and it bounced up perfectly for the wing.
But a try to Scott Gregory set up a nervous finish to the match.
With the ball on the 5m metre line, the Turbos managed to win a penalty on fulltime and clear their lines for the six-point win.
Manawatu 31 (Andre Taylor 2, Johnny Galloway, Jamie Booth, tries; Otere Black 4 con, pen) Northland 25 (Sam Nock, Ross Wright, Scott Gregory, tries, Jack Debreczeni 2 con, 2 pen) HT 24-10.
