 2015 Turbos Season Results1

The Turbos entered 2015 as the newly promoted side in the premiership and with a largely different squad from 2014 with key players taking their trade to Europe including stalwarts Nick Crosswell and Mike FitzGerald.
The Green and White travelled to Pukekohe for their opening match taking on Counties Manukau. It became quickly very clear that the new look team were still finding their feet as Counties charged out to 20 point lead in the first 30min with the Turbos well and truly caught in the headlights. The team came out more settled in the second half outscoring Counties 21-17 to come up 1 point short of a draw.

The Turbos then headed back to the Manawatu to take on a Waikato side who they had previously beaten last season. However in what would become an all too familiar pattern for 2015 the Turbos let Waikato skip out to an 18pt lead inside the first 20mins. Again the Turbos would chase the gam in the second half outscoring Waikato 21-7 only to see poor execution stop them claiming a victory finally going down 28-21.

Following the frustration of the first two games the Turbos stared down a tough gauntlet on paper with 2014 runner up Tasman, eventual 2015 champions Canterbury and eventual 2015 finalists Auckland. Despite improved performances the Turbos struggle to keep up with the class of the heavy weights succumbing to heavy defeats in each game.

With the team 0-5 the Turbos headed into round six with a lot at steak with relegation looking likely. Sensing this urgency the Turbos put in a display more reminiscent with what fans were expecting from them in 2015 thumping Northland 42-17 at home to chalk up their first win. There was to be no wonder run though as the team was abruptly brought back down to earth in Invercargill, humbled by Southland 49-14. Despite the heavy defeat the team began to show they were beginning to gel as a unit as they refocussed to beat North Harbour at home.

As the season came to a close the tension around the relegation battle began to build with both Waikato and the Green and White in dismal contention. The Turbos would face reigning champions Taranaki at home in an important clash but again fall off the pace leaving their destiny out of their control for the final game of the season.

The team would travel to Wellington knowing that if they beat the Lions with a bonus point and Hawke’s Bay defended the shield against Waikato they would remain in the premiership. However in a shock upset Waikato snatched the shield from Hawke’s Bay dodging relegation in the process. With the pressure of the relegation battle well and truly over the Turbos completely outclassed Wellington to retain the Coronation Cup running out 39-33 winners with only a late Wellington surge making the score as close as it did.

The Turbos entered 2014 with a balance of experience and youth in the squad and after a strong pre-season against Wellington and Tasman the team was in good shape. For the first time the Turbos won their opening game away from home. The team displayed the grit a hardworking off season had installed in them as they came from behind to beat Northland. Despite a lapse against Auckland the following week the Turbos came back to beat Wellington in the capital in round three. The Turbos followed up toppling the Lions by beating Bay of Plenty and Counties Manukau leaving them with four wins from five games.

A rain sodden game in North Harbour saw the Turbos lose a game that on paper they dominated across all areas with only the scoreboard telling a different story. The Turbos quickly proved that the North Harbour game was a minor slip up as they belted Southland at home 41-20 before travelling to Waikato where they won 22-20 thanks to an outstanding defensive effort in the final minutes.

It was clear that the Turbos were a force to be reckoned with as they continued on their march beating rivals Hawke’s Bay convincingly before heading down south and turning the table on 2013 Otago game running out 38-25 winners and securing a home semi final in the process.

The Turbos came up against a tough Southland side in their home semi-final eventually winning 23-18 whilst rivals Hawke’s Bay took out Northland in their semi-final clash setting up the ultimate re-match.

With rivalry, revenge and promotion on the line both teams came out of the blocks firing in front of a sell-out Manawatu crowd. The game ran at high intensity from the kick off and with the wind behind them Hawke’s Bay took a 14-6 lead into the sheds at halftime. The second half saw the Turbos take control of the game thanks to a quick fire strike back try to halfback Kayne Hammington. The Turbos continued to pile on the pressure as they secured a 27-24 lead heading into the closing stages. Hawke’s Bay pushed back to have the Turbos defending their own line with one minute to go, with one final roll of the dice a grubber kick was put through which Turbos wing Nathan Tudreu latched onto before streaking the length of the field for the championship sealing try.

The Turbos took 3 rounds to open their account in 2013, after a close loss to Auckland and a last quarter blowout in Wellington the Turbos squeezed out North Harbour at home 15-12. The team was able to follow up with a win in the next round versus Southland in a game that saw the Turbos wear a unique jersey to help raise money for the local children’s ward.

Following their two wins the Turbos played in the highest scoring try-fest of the season against Otago in Dunedin. A back a forth affair the Turbos were just edged out by two last minute tries going down
41-52. The energy put into the Dunedin clearly showed against Canterbury who breezed past the Green and White. Disappointed with their efforts away from home the Turbos restored faith beating Taranaki And then Northland in Palmerston North making 2013 the Turbos second most successful season.

In order to secure a playoff spot the Turbos required a win against the inform and eventual champions Tasman in Nelson. The task would prove too much for the green and white as they ended their season outside the semi-final placing.

After their exceptional form in 2011 the Turbos headed into 2012 with a number of key personnel missing. On the back of retirements and the All Blacks selection of both Aaron Smith and Aaron Cruden
the team was completely different to that of the year before.

First up losses to both Wellington and Auckland the team showed plenty of character beating Northland in round three for their first win of the season and grabbed their second in a nail biter against North Harbour 23-20 in round five. The following week the Turbos lost by 3 points to eventual champions Counties Manukau a result that could have guaranteed a semi-final berth.

The Turbos playoff hopes came down to a must win game in Southland. In what was a dogged game of the forwards the Turbos with the lead in hand leaked a try in the dying minutes leaving them to finish 5th just outside a playoff spot. It was clear that the Turbos were rebuilding but there were plenty of positive points to take from a solid season.
